James Monroe's Highland Overview
Highland is the historic residence and property of the fifth U.S. president, James Monroe. Conveniently located a short distance from Charlottesville, the estate offers mountain and pasture views paired with rustic ambience. President and First Lady Monroe shared over 40 years as husband and wife, many of them here at the property they called Highland, nestled in the rolling hills of Albemarle County. In September, 1808 their eldest daughter Eliza was married at their Highland home. In the tradition of these historic marriages, Highland invites couples to celebrate their unions at the home of James and Elizabeth Monroe. A historic house with adjacent gardens, James Monroe’s Highland provides a selection of locations for wedding ceremonies, cocktail hours, and receptions. Each party is provided optimal privacy and flexibility. We encourage you to welcome your guests here as James and Elizabeth Monroe welcomed theirs. Acquired in 1974 by William & Mary, Monroe’s alma mater, Highland has more than 30 years experience in hosting wedding celebrations. The rental fee ranges from $3,500 to $6,900 for a ceremony and reception and includes 13 hours of rental time including set up and clean up time. A cocktail hour is also included with a ceremony and reception. A refundable security deposit of $500 is required. A portion of the rental fee is a philanthropic tax-deductible donation, which goes directly toward the funding of restoration projects for the historic estate of President James Monroe.
