St. Mark's Lutheran Church Overview

The striking red brick exterior and Gothic architecture of this official landmark of San Francisco is impressive upon first view. Guests enter through wooden doors above which “St. Markus Kirche” appears in stained glass. The historic church, built in 1894, recently underwent a major renovation to restore and refinish the interior and exterior. Inside, the finely tiled Narthex and glass-paneled doors with brass details reveal the breathtaking Sanctuary: pale-blue arched ceilings soar above the Nave and are enhanced by graceful trim, period light fixtures and curved wooden pews. Statuesque, jewel-tone windows line the perimeter of the Sanctuary which is crowned by the craftsmanship and regal details of the Chancel. A symphony of light streams through the Rosette window which adorns the Balcony, and the grand Taylor & Boody pipe organ stands ready to fill the sacred space with joyful music. St. Mark’s has three space options for your rehearsal dinner or wedding reception. These spaces are flexible and can be decorated beautifully to capture your vision and evoke your personal style: Heritage Hall, a gracious and traditional space with many windows and period details, is available for receptions and rehearsal dinners. It can comfortably seat 120 people or up to 200 for something less formal. A fully-equipped catering kitchen is available for use by your caterer. Heritage Hall easily transforms into a stunning reception space and is ready for your vision and creativity! The Auditorium is suitable for larger receptions. A highly flexible space, it can accommodate sit-down receptions for up to 180 people, or cake/beverage receptions for up to 300. There is space for a dance floor, stage and bar. A prep kitchen is available for use. St. Mark's Square, an expansive yet protected outdoor space adjacent to the Church, offers views of the Church's stately facade and Cathedral Hill surroundings, bench seating areas and landscaping.

Venue Notes

Our Wedding Package is $3500 and includes: three-hour use of the Church on the day of your wedding for set-up, ceremony, and photos; rehearsal a day or two before your wedding; Pastor's services to plan your ceremony, provide pre-marital counseling and officiate at your wedding; our Director of Music's services to select your music and play for your ceremony; a Wedding Coordinator to guide you through the process at St. Mark's and be present at your rehearsal and the day of your wedding; dressing rooms/staging areas for the Couple and Wedding Party; parking for up to 40 cars and security attendant. Rental fees for Heritage Hall, Auditorium and St. Mark's Square (reception spaces) are separate from the Wedding Package and begin at $150.00 per hour.
